The Department of Pharmacognosy is mainly concerned with the study of crude drugs from plant, animal, marine, mineral and microbial sources. The subject is included in the syllabi of B.Pharm and Pharm.D programmes. The main objective of the department is to provide practical exposure to the undergraduates and research students about different extraction and isolation techniques and for evaluation of adulterated crude drugs. For this, the department is equipped with well experienced faculties and modern equipments. The department aims to explore the folklore medicines, to establish their exact scientific relevance and to combine the traditional knowledge and modern science for development of new herbal formulations for patient care. The drug museum in the department is having sufficient number of crude drugs. We also maintain a herbarium with collection of many drugs. The department expertise in the major research areas like herbal drug standardization, histological analysis of crude drugs, extraction, isolation and purification of phytoconstituents, formulation of herbal cosmetics and evaluation of marketed polyherbal formulations.
The Pharmacognosy laboratory is provisioned with advanced instruments for practical work and research.
Medicinal Garden- India has a rich diversity of medicinal plants. The department of Pharmacognosy owns a medicinal garden with around 100 different varieties of medicinal plants which is properly maintained. The plants are labelled by their common names and scientific names. The primary objective of establishing this garden is to conserve some of the most common and important species of medicinal and aromatic plants which are being used in day-to-day primary health care.
